Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were no match against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
