Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
