Time is optimal to change Manchester United's tactical setup - the manager declares.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team players absent from the Boxing Day win against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that changing Manchester United's formation due to external scrutiny would have been "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his trademark back three setup with wide defenders and instead deploy an traditional four-man defense shielded by two central midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively functioned as a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his squad held on for a win - securing just their second-ever shutout of the season.

Although he once famously said that even the Pope could compel him to change his approach, Amorim asserts the option to experiment with alternative formations has consistently been part of his plan.

However, he emphasizes he could only implement the change when his team were faring well enough - otherwise it would look as if he was giving in to external criticism.

"When I arrived here last season, I realized maybe I don't have the personnel to play well in that formation, but it was the commencement of a journey," he stated.

"The goal was to build an style. Currently is a different time. We are missing a lot of personnel, and we need adjust, so they see the reason we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the demands of you guys, or the supporters.

"Whenever you discuss changing the system all the time, I cannot make a change because the players will believe I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is a disaster for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, then is the moment to adapt.

"We will develop into a stronger side because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not intending to employ a back three exclusively."

Availability Issues Loom Large

Having only two wins in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been in good form.

He is, though, operating with a severely stretched squad, with seven first-team stars already confirmed absent for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will grow if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to shake off the knock that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, despite the fact he is understood to be pushing his boss to let him to return after his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already insisting he needs to train," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can write that."

The Captain's Leadership Remains

However, the Portuguese star will likely still be heavily involved, as whereas most unavailable stars watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to continue offering insight.

"The guy is a natural leader," he declared. "He cannot be that guy that when he is not playing, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"He has bad things sometimes - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a lot of positive qualities. After he recovers, he heads to observe the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Schedule for Key Personnel

While the exact timeline for the captain's return - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
