Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
