Much like the recent storm hit the northern region the prior day, City swept the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the league summit.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline marked back-to-back league losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' ability to balance domestic and European football with a small team has been a hotly discussed issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always appeared this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Regrettably for the away side, they looked weary throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a handful of changes. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Opening Threats

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's 7th header of the season.

They increased their lead with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to drive through the middle from defense, the pitch opened up for City. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before sending a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to fire a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The primary change came from Skinner at the break as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to produce a single shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to overcome any side who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable standing after nine matches.
