Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
