Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in court.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
