The world could be facing challenges, but a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor from the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to encourage the public to act.

The medal will honor in honour of the renowned scientist and conservationist who died recently. It is designed to celebrate those who protect our planet's biodiversity.

Award Details

The inaugural winners are expected to be announced at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

It was shared that Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had backed the medal's establishment. “The idea of having this medal, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. And I think due to the unique connection she had with us.”

“This medal will recognize enduring projects carried out to create a planet improved for people, animals and the environment and offer support to carry on such efforts,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of the festival stated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably include several divisions.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach that we created a decade past,” he explained. Goodall was an honoree of that very medal.

Expressing concern on the outlook of the planet, one figure stated, “Frankly, it is difficult to feel hopeful. Certain policies in one major nation is conducting an assault on knowledge. This situation undermines global initiatives.”

“Realistically, things don’t look very good which means we need to commence thinking again, much more seriously regarding the impact of our actions. And that’s not just climate change, but also the entire manner in which we interact with the natural world.”

A Call to Action

As a result, observers believe this is a good time to follow Goodall’s example. “It is believed that in bestowing this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to change the way we treat the other animals with which we share the planet.”

Another key issue today is the proliferation of misinformation. The focus of next year’s Starmus festival is set as “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality has become a matter of debate when politics are involved. This is an alarming trend,” it was said. “The science of climate is a science; you cannot allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The goal is that this honor will spur action. “It focuses on inspiring individuals to participate and to show concern and to work toward these goals, really. Regardless of if we’re optimistic, we must focus on working our utmost,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, yet we must have to work toward success.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection shared hope that “given direction and once enabled, humanity can be diligent stewards of our planet”, pointing to the work of an institute which, among its other activities, empowers the next generation become engaged locally, wildlife, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall often emphasized, the choices we make each day make a difference and it is up to us the kind of difference we choose to create,” he said. “There is still time and this medal will offer support and raise awareness about beneficial initiatives currently in progress.”
